HistoryThe history of high school based Army Cadet Crops' can be traced back to the late 1800s with the first such program at Leavenworth High School, Camp Leavenworth, Kansas. The United States Army Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps (JROTC) came into being with the passage of the nation Defense Act of 1916. Under provisions of the Act, high schools were authorized the loan of federal military equipment and assignment of active duty military personnel as instructors. In 1964, the Vitalization Act opened up JROTC to other services and replaced the active duty instructors with military retirees.
In 1998, Littlerock high School established an Army Corps of cadets organized under the auspices of the California Cadet Corps, California National guard. The program emphasized military bearing, physical fitness and military drill. Department of the Army General Order 18, dated 01 July 2004, established the United States Army JROTC program at Littlerock High School; and, the unit was designated as the "Lobo Battalion". Sergeant Major Arthur Walker was appointed as the first Senior Army Instructor and cadet Lieutenant Colonel Craig Webb was the first Cadet Battalion Commander. |
